CLASSES of Instruction
sKindergarten
In kindergarten, students have the opportunity to explore the world of music through singing, listening to various types of music, movement and playing rhythm instruments. They will learn to find and develop their singing voices and sense of rhythm through group activities that include circle games, rhythm bands and storytelling. Students in the Ukrainian program also learn Ukrainian seasonal songs.
Grade 1 and 2
Mr. Ryczak teaches some of the grade 1 and all of 2 classes at HTS. Students will develop their singing voices through group singing of seasonal songs. As well, they learn to distinguish different rhythm patterns and demonstrate their understanding by playing a variety of rhythm instruments. Each of the classes has three 30-minute classes per cycle. As well, each class will be attending an additional choir class conducted by Mr. Ryczak and/or Mrs. Clyde. They will rehearse seasonal and fun songs in preparation for special assemblies, concerts and the Lord Selkirk Music Celebration (festival) held in the spring.
K to 4 English Ukrainian Bilingual Program
All students in the bilingual program at HTS will learn to sing in the Ukrainian language as part of the cultural component. Each class has three 30 minute classes each cycle. As well, each EU class will attend an English choir period with the other English classes. In years past, each class in the program prepared musical selections for the Christmas concert and the grade 1-4 classes went caroling in the community with the grade 5-8 Ukrainian classes from ESMS. In the spring, the grade 2 -4 Ukrainian choir participated in the Lord Selkirk Music Celebration. Grade 3 students participated in a divisional dance festival held in May.
Grade 3 & 4
Mr. Ryczak also teaches all of the grade 3 and some of the grade 4 students. Each class has three 30 -minute classes per school day cycle. As well, each class will soon attend two additional choir classes per cycle. Students in grade 3 and 4 continue with a singing and instrument program featuring the introduction of the recorder in grade 4. In years past, all of the students participated in a Christmas concerts, a dance festival (grade 3), an instrumental festival (grade 4), and a choral festival in May.
